Last Tuesday the Garden Club held a ‘Working Bee’, to tidy up the garden, ready for winter planting. Along with the many committed Garden Club children, they had an AWESOME turnout of extra helpers and were able to achieve far more than expected. A huge thank you to; Victoria Cadness, Dee Niriain and their team of hard workers; Jen Farmer, Sarah Hoban, Janie Savage, Kirsty Rorke, Selina Peng, Leisl Wolmarans, Janine Lee and Julie King, who also supplied two big burly men from CF King Contracting. We also had two preschool "helpers" Alex Brockliss and Finn Wolmarans too. Special thanks to Deborah Bensley, who gave us access via the Pony Club for bringing the mulch in close to the garden and Colin Brockliss (Isabel and Olivia’s Poppa) who picked up and delivered three trailer loads of mulch. Thank you, the garden looks fabulous! |
We've had a great start to the year at garden club. The sunflowers and tomatoes that we planted in term four last year provided us with a plentiful harvest. The sunflowers had put on a beautiful display and once finished we harvested the heads, bagged them in brown paper bags and hung them with string to dry so we can save the seeds later this term. The tomatoes provided a huge harvest and over the first few weeks of term the kids have collected ripe red and yellow tomatoes to take home. As one of our keen young members said "on Mondays we harvest food to take home for dinner!". It's been great to see some of the classes coming out to the garden to have a look and also good to know the staff have been enjoying fresh tomatoes with their lunch. This patch of garden has now been cleared to rest ready to be resown soon with winter vegetables. Next week we are making suet bird feeders and sowing seeds into trays ready for planting into the garden later in Autumn. Victoria, Dee and Gail
