Coatesville Ski Team 2015
Three lucky Coatesville students, Georgia Dagg, Alexander Kidd and Michol Hinton spent a week in the snow at Whakapapa representing our School at the annual North Island Primary School ski Champs. This is the largest single sport event in Australasia with nearly 1000 students skiers, snow boarders and disabled skiers competing over two weeks. Each skier competes in Giant Slalom and dual Slalom. Michol was placed 7th, 1.16 seconds behind the winner and Georgia was 79th out of 93 skiers. Alexander fell on his first race but the next day they all won their dual slalom races. Even though they only had 3 skiers ( teams are meant to have 5 members) they came 33rd out of 64 teams. Great effort and fantastic sportsmanship especially Alexander and Georgia as this was their first ski racing experience. Georgia hopes that there will be a Coatesville team next year as she enjoyed it so much she wants to compete again. Thank you to Garth Hinton, Winston Kidd and James Dagg who took the children to the champs. Great job! North Island Primary School Ski Championship 2014
Over 400 primary school students attended the 25th NIPS Ski Championship at Whakapapa Ski field, Mt Ruapehu last week. While a lahar warning on Monday looked like it was going to spoil the event we had three days of racing in perfect blue sky conditions and great snow. Unfortunately Coatesville School did not manage to get a team together this year so Michol Hinton was our only representative and was balloted to Fernhill School, Masterton, as their fifth skier. 158 junior girls, up to Year 6, were competing. Michol was the 129th skier down the race course and had a great race recording the 4th fastest time on both runs. She also won her dual slalom race convincingly competing against the girl who came third. |

This is only the second time that this event has been held giving students an opportunity to represent their school skiing. Over 100 students attended this years event with Coatesville being represented by Alexander Kidd, Callum Maxwell, Charlie Neunz, Spike Jackson, Jackson Dagg, Lydia Claridge, Georgia Dagg and Michol Hinton . For most of these students it was their first experience of ski racing and they all skied extremely well. Michol was placed third in junior girls and the girls team also came third in the team event. The boys team came sixth which is a fantastic result for a group of first time ski races. The final race of the North Island Interfiled series was held at Snow Planet last weekend. Michol won this race and with the points gained from the races during the season she also won the North Island under 12 year old girls title for 2015. |
Coatesville Ski Team
Coatesville Primary first competed in the North Island Primary School Ski Champs in 2008. Our first team was made up of just three skiers, Lucas Hinton, Alexander Badley and Anna-Lise Hinton. They had a fabulous day racing and all manages to complete the race course without mishap. For Alexander it was her first ever ski race and she place 49 out of 60 Junior girls . Lucas came 24th out of 96 Junior Boys and Anna-Lise 21 out of 60 Junior girls. As a team we came 9th out of 21 Junior teams. A brilliant result for our first try at this event and with no training!
In 2009 we managed to get a full team of 5 skiers. While the weather was against us we finally managed to complete two days of racing. In Junior girls Anna-Lise Hinton placed 16th, Clodagh McCullough 30th, Jana Unernahrer 53rd, Emma Cadman 55th out of 66 skiers and in Junior boys Sam Beckman placed 77 out of 114 skiers. Overall our team came 12th out of 21 Junior teams which is a brilliant result fr a group of novice ski racers.
In 2010 the whether only allowed allowed us one day of racing but the Coatesville team exceeded all expectations and came 12th in the Junior teams event. In the giant slalom out of 80 junior girls Anna-Lise Hinton came 5th (0.25 seconds behind 2nd place) and first time ski racers Sophie Egnot-Johnson came 30th and Bridie McCullough came 33rd. There were 114 Junior boys competing and first time ski racers Thomas Applegath came 59th and Logan Beckman 97th.
Our 2012 Coatesville team did amazingly well coming 10 out of 36 teams in the junior competition. The junior competition is for students up to year 6 (3 of our team are only in year 3). We went knowing the team would not be competitive but aiming to have fun and enjoy what was for many their first experience of ski racing on a mountain so this is a tremendous result.
In the individual competition Cameron Brownsey came 19 out of 137 junior boys. Out of 130 girls Michol Hinton placed 31, Olivia Applegath placed 64 and Frankie Benison 110 completing her first ever ski race and qualifying for the next day’s racing.
Because we had a late withdrawal we were allocated a skier from National Park school to make up our team of 5 competitors. We asked for Lola Crump who is Cameron’s cousin and attended our school last year for a term as a Year 2 student. She was thrilled to be included and had a great day racing placing 39th.
