Waiata Celebration

7/7/2018

This term Tui Team learnt some wait, with the help of Mrs Neal. We were unable to perform them at the intended performance and so took this opportunity to share with family and friends. The students worked very hard learning the songs, and the actions and were very excited to share them with loved ones.

We also used this opportunity to share their learning over the term, which helped set them up for conferences. Mr Rosamond and I thoroughly enjoyed learning the songs along with the students and along with Mrs Neal were extremely proud of their performance.

For anyone who missed it, we reordered the waiata for you to enjoy. We hope you all have a wonderful break and are looking forward to another exciting term.

Say No to Bullying and Spreading Kindness

Our Coatesville has a zero tolerance on bullying - we have systems in place to help reporting any bullying behaviour - and we used this week to help highlight those processes. We started with reminding the students to start with their KID POWERS - we went over some scenarios to help practice the words we would use in a situation where someone had wronged us, by letting them know they hurt us and giving them an opportunity to apologise:
Then we discussed what was the best way to respond in a situation. We used Tim and Sally to demonstrate:
Tim: Stop it, Sally, I don't like it when you talk to me like that. It makes me feel sad.
Sally: I'm sorry Tim, I didn't mean to make you feel sad. I promise it won't happen again.
Tim: Ok, Sally, I forgive you.
If the Sally had responded differently, then Tim should go to the teacher to get some help. We would like to empower the students to be problem solvers and learn conflict resolution skills to deal with minor disagreements and accidents.

Our 5 key messages for keeping everyone safe can be found in the May 15th newsletter.  We ended the week with the annual PINK SHIRT DAY - be part of the movement towards making young people feel good about who they are.

Spreading Kindness

Another big focus this week was spreading kindness. As a Team, Tui completed a Kindness Challenge - they were split off into groups and challenged to write complements and kind words on strips of paper and then make the longest chain. They had to work as a team and ensure they did not repeat any complements. If they repeated one, we would stop the count there and tally up the compliments before - the winning team came up with 27 complements before they repeated and second place was hot on their heals at 24.
If you have any concerns around bullying behaviour towards your child, please ask them to speak to a teacher, or make a time to sit down with your child and the teacher to discuss your concerns. We take every complaint seriously and investigate any suggestions of bullying. We need your help to make sure that Coatesville School is a Bully Free Zone.

While the Year 4s do PATs, the Year 3s have been enjoying some team building time together. We are focusing on mixing up the classes to ensure that students get an opportunity to work with students they don't normally work with.

Room 11 took part in the nationwide Get NZ Writing activity where as a class you complete a range of activities and create a poster and collaborate art piece that is then shred with another school.
  1. The first part of this activity was complete by walking around the school, looking around, listening and smelling (see earlier post).
  2. These ideas were then created into metaphors which were written on the back of the postcards (watch our blog for our awesome metaphors).
  3. We then were given random postcards and asked to colour it in.
  4. Lastly, we put together the all our wonderful pieces to create the artwork above. It was really interesting watching the students put the artwork together. Watching as they realised it didn't go in a long line but instead made a 4 by 8 image.

What a wonderful day! The weather gave us a show but thankfully the wind died down and the sun came out.

Well done to everyone who competed and those that places. Room 11 and Room 12 swimmers did an awesome job pushing Room 13 to really dig deep for their wins. Congratulations to Room 13 for their clean sweep of the Class relays.

As part of an ongoing writing activity, Room 11 took a walk around the school to look, hear and smell all the wonder things Coatesville has to offer. We will be working on our descriptions to share with another school in Gisborne and look forward to receiving their descriptions. Watch this space for our completed work.

Tui Team have been meeting once a week to work on their small ball skills. Each week, Tui team split off into mixed teams and take part in a couple of skill based games to practice throwing, catching, hitting and bouncing tennis balls. This is great for teamwork and hand-eye coordination.
