For art this term we are constructing Taniwha masks. We are onto our fourth week and the features are nearly complete. Soon we will be starting to decorate our masks.
We are finding our about measurement. Here we are working out the perimeter of objects in the classroom.
We started with a school wheelie bin. We fill two of these a week.
Our first step was to empty the bin onto the tarp. Then we sorted the rubbish into four groups.
Bottom left- paper.
Top left- food scraps.
Top right- snack wrappers/ packets.
Bottom right- soft plastic.
As a group we decided that only the top right corner pile of wrappers and packets needed to go into the rubbish bin. So 3/4 of the waste could be disposed of in other ways. We were surprised by the amount of paper as each class has a recycling bin for paper.
Our next step is to come up with new systems to collect and dispose of the 3/4s of this waste in a more sustainable way. Then we will look at how we can reduce the amount of packaging we produce.
